504 Plan vs. IEP

Summary

When we look at the similarities and differences between 504 Plans and IEP's, we can see that both
are aimed at helping individuals with disabilities in the classroom. In my opinion, 504 plans see
much more flexible with many options for students, but IEPs appear to hold more support through
schools due to their funding and larger teams of educators. IEPs seem to have more state standards
and set rules because of their state funding which I feel can lead to better results in learning for
students with disabilities, but also may take more time to gain access to for new students after
evaluation because of the need to align with the student's needs as well as state standards. While both
programs are different in many ways, I believe that both plans are asking the correct questions and
taking the proper steps to ensure that individuals with disabilities are given all of the proper tools in
their educational careers.

  1. Reid, I agree that although 504 plans are more flexible, IEPs might give students more support. In addition to having more funding, IEPs also seem to be more strict about teachers following the support plan. This makes sense because IEPs are more restrictive about who can have an IEP; students must have an evaluation of their disability.

  2. Reid - Like Jennie pointed out, I think there might be more accountability with IEP's when compared to 504's. Since IEP's are state based and have a larger group of participants, I feel like the implementation and follow up might be better leading towards a better learning experience for the student. Also, since an IEP moves a student from accommodations into the special education group, there might be additional support people available to make sure that the IEP is implemented and used to its full potential.
